Department appoints additional Specialist.
The Limpopo Department of Health has just appointed seven more Specialists in its quest to develop and improve its tertiary and specialist services. The specialists are Head of Clinical Department for Forensic Pathology and six Heads of Clinical Units in key disciplines such as Obstetrics, Paedetrics, Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology. The seven specialists have assumed their duties as of the 1st of May 2018 and are stationed at the two tertiary Hospitals which are Mankweng and Pietersburg.
The availability of specialists in our hospital will greatly reduce patients’ outside the province referrals in order to receive sub speciality care. Currently, the department has 56 specialists at the 2 tertiary hospitals and plan to appoint an additional 59 this year, including Heads of Clinical Departments and Heads of Clinical Unit in Key Disciplines.
The department will in no time advertise posts for Heads of Clinical Department and Heads of Clinical Unit. There are an additional 23 specialists in our 5 regional hospitals and 3 Specialist Family Physicians based at district hospitals.
In addition, the department is up skilling the available specialist. Two Specialists have been sent to National Referral Centres for sub speciality in Cardiology to capacitate the Cardiac Unit. One is studying Adult Cardiology and one is doing
Paediatric Cardiology. An additional two are sub- specialising in Urological Gynaecology.
The Department also runs an active program with the College of Medicine for the training of Doctors on Anaesthesia. So far 14 doctors have successfully completed the program.
